11 Sep 2017Press Release
Statement by Albert Owen on voting against the EU (Withdrawal) Bill on Second Reading
Tonight I intend to support the reasoned amendment in the name of the Opposition and vote against the EU (Withdrawal) Bill that has put down by the Government.
In the June election campaign I made it clear that I would fight for a sensible Brexit for Ynys Môn, Wales and the UK, and to oppose the Government when I believe it is not acting in the interest of the Country.
The Government’s Bill is an attempt to undermine the UK’s sovereign Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and to concentrate power in the hands of individual ministers. This undercuts both parliamentary democracy and the will of the people, who in June 2017 took away the Conservative’s majority, mandate and moral authority.
In the 2016 EU Referendum I said I would respect and accept the result, and I voted for Article 50 in Parliament. In the 2017 election I said I would hold the Government to account and fight for the best deal for my constituents and the country. In voting for the Labour amendment I am honouring both and upholding the Party manifesto and the personal standpoint which I was elected on.

It’s a great honour to have been re-elected as the Member of Parliament for our Island.

There are many challenges and opportunities ahead, only by working together can we ensure that Anglesey can prosper.

The voices of Anglesey will continue to be heard loud and clear in Westminster.

My campaign was all about ‘Working for All’ and that is exactly what I will do.

I would like to thank all those who supported me over the past weeks, I am so very grateful for your tremendous efforts.

Albert Owen MP

Mae'n anrhydedd mawr i gael fy ail-ethol fel Aelod Seneddol ar gyfer ein hynys.

Mae llawer o heriau a cyfleoedd o'n blaenau. Dim ond trwy cydweithio y gallwn sicrhau y gall Ynys Môn ffynnu.

Bydd lleisiau Môn yn parhau i gael eu clywed yn uchel ac yn glir yn San Steffan. Roedd fy ymgyrch am 'Gweithio ar gyfer yr holl' a dyna yn union beth fyddai'n ei wneud.

Hoffwn ddiolch i bawb wnaeth fy nghefnogi dros yr wythnosau diwethaf, yr wyf yn ddiolchgar iawn am eich ymdrechion aruthrol.

“Heddiw, cafwyd datganiad gan y Prif Weinidog, Theresa May, y cynhelir Etholiad Cyffredinol ar 8 Mehefin. Daeth hyn wedi iddi ddweud droeon na fyddai etholiad ar fyr rybudd yn cael ei alw ganddi gan na fyddai hynny o fudd i’r wlad. Mae ei datganiad heddiw yn dro pedol ac yn benderfyniad pleidiol a cheisio bachu cyfle.”

Er hynny, os cynhelir etholiad, byddaf yn brwydro i gadw’r sedd y bûm yn ei gwasanaethu â balchder ers 2001, gan barhau i roi lles cymuned gyfan Ynys Môn yn flaenoriaeth. Ceisiaf, fel bob amser, uno’r gymuned gan gydweithio â’r rhai sydd â barnau gwleidyddol gwahanol, a’r rhai sydd heb farn o gwbl.”

“Llwyddais i ennill enw da fel rhywun sy’n uno pobl ac mae gennyf y profiad i lywio ein cymunedau a’r Ynys hon drwy’r cyfnod anodd hwn. Diolchaf i bawb sydd eisoes wedi datgan eu cefnogaeth tuag ataf.”

“Dylai Etholiad Cyffredinol geisio ymdrin â lles ein cymunedau a’r wlad yn hytrach na buddion y Prif Weinidog a’i phlaid.”

“Today, the Prime Minister Theresa May has signaled that a General Election will take place on June 8th. This after repeatedly saying she would not call a snap election and it was not in the country’s interest to do so. Her statement and U-turn today is purely partisan and opportunistic.”

“That said, if a June election goes ahead, I will fight to retain the seat that I have been proud to serve since 2001 and continue to put the interests of the whole Ynys Môn community first.  I will look to unite the community and work with those of other political persuasion and of none, as I have always done.”

“I have gained a strong reputation for bringing people together and have the experience to navigate our communities and Island through these uncertain times. I thank all those who have already sent their support to me.”

“A General Election should be about the interests of our communities and the country and not about the interest of the Prime Minister and her party.”
