Ynys Môn Labour have today written to Virginia Crosbie MP to ask her to join them in calling for Dominic Cummings to be sacked. In addition we have asked several key questions about her Government’s conduct and the impact this has had on their credibility and the rule of law.

People are rightly angry that a senior member of the Government has flouted rules designed to keep us all safe, rules that he himself helped to write. There cannot be one rule for us and another for him, no-one is above the law.

As our elected representative it is Virginia Crosbie’s role to provide leadership and speak for the community on issues of UK importance. Our MP must speak out on this issue and let local people know where she stands; she cannot hide behind silence on such a important issue for the country. She must show the moral courage of leadership on behalf of the community.

Our letter follows:

Dear Virginia

Following the weekend’s revelations about Dominic Cummings, will you join with us and those of your Conservative colleagues with a moral compass who are calling on Cummings to be sacked? The law in England at the time was clear: if anyone in your household shows symptoms of coronavirus then you should stay at home and self isolate for 14 days. The only exception to this was where there was an imminent threat to life.

Could you therefore also answer the following questions:

As Mr Cummings himself is reported by the Government not to have had symptoms at the time of their journey north, do you agree with us that his journey was illegal?

What do you think the Prime Minister’s backing of Mr Cummings tells of us his own judgement?

How can the police now issue fines to members of the public who have broken lock down laws if the Prime Minister is willing to allow exceptions for his aides?

At a time of national crisis, people across the country have recognised the need for sacrifice to protect lives. Local residents have stayed away when their own family members have been ill or dying following your Government’s advice. We trust that you will honour that sacrifice by joining us in calling for Mr Cummings to be sacked.

Yours sincerely

Andy Short
