WELCOME HELP FOR LONG – STAY PATIENTS DURING THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

When hospital visiting was suspended on the 26th March there was a sudden and unexpected change to the lives of long-stay patients in the area.

Visitors don’t just brighten up their day. They bring in toiletries and treats – things like chocolate bars, juices and milk shakes.

Members of Ynys Môn Labour Party have stepped in to help fill the gap. A donations page was set up and over £700 pounds raised from members’ donations.

The money is being shared between the Cemlyn Ward at Ysbyty Cefni, Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley and Hergest Unit in Ysbyty Gwynedd.

Requests from the wards have included shower gel, shaving gel, combs and toothbrushes.

Holyhead Town Councillor Jen Saboor, who organised the donations for Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley said, “The staff from Penrhos Stanley told me that the most urgent need was for clothing such as nightwear and loungewear. Normally visitors bring in fresh supplies and the shortage was making life really difficult for both staff and patients. I’d like to thank Morrison’s Holyhead for their help with the shopping.”

Staff on the Hergest Unit have said: ‘The Nursing and Therapy teams at Uned Hergest would like to give a big thank you to the Ynys Mon CLP on behalf of the inpatients currently in hospital. Visiting and leave restrictions are particularly hard for those away from their families at a difficult point in their lives. The monies donated is being used both for some immediate R&R – Takeaway & Movie nights, along with contributing to media devices to enable patients to Skype call or ‘Zoom’ home. Many Thanks’

The gifts have also been a morale boost for staff, as they continue to look after vulnerable patients under very difficult circumstances. Donations can be made via the Awyr Las, our local NHS charity, which is able to allocate donations to the department of your choice. More information on how members of the public can donate to Awyr Las is available from https://awyrlas.org.uk/how-you-can-help
